Are you effectively engaging your Youth Volunteers?

Young volunteers bring skills and fresh ideas to projects. These skills can help your projects reach their highest potential. It is important to effectively use your youth volunteers. Attached is a document I created which outlines Roger Hart’s Ladder of Youth Participation. Levels of youth participation range from 1 to 8 and are set up like rungs on a ladder. As you view this document, ask yourself: Am I at level 1 where I only use youth to support a cause but have little impact, or am I at level 8 where youth help inspire new and innovated projects?

This document can be very helpful when sorting tasks for your volunteers. Youth are often overlooked and given tasks that may be too easy.

On page 2 of this document you will find a short activity with 8 different scenarios.  These scenarios all match a particular level on Hart’s Ladder.

Happy Wednesday,
-Kyle
